Electrotechnology is an exciting and increasingly diverse industry including installation
and repair of lights, power, air conditioning, supply industry, fire protection,
security alarm systems, data/telecommunications systems, project planning and estimating.
The entry requirements for an electrotechnology apprenticeship include:
- A person aged 15 years or over
- To have completed at least year 10
- Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces and around moving machinery
- Ability to distinguish between colours
- Have a good grasp of English and mathematics
- Personal attributes including, positive attitude, interest in the electrotechnology
industry as a career, good presentation, honest and reliable.

Domestic & Commercial
Electrical contractors involved in the domestic and commercial sector of the industry
are considered to be the heart of the industry. They carry out their daily duties
on multi-storey buildings, shopping centres, domestic flats and houses etc
- Installation of main and sub-main switchboards
- Power and lighting systems
- Emergency and exit lighting
- Installation of power points and power supplies to specialized
equipment

Data & Communications
This area of the electrical contracting industry is always changing because it involves
the latest in telephone, computer and optical fibre communications systems.
- Computer cabling design and installations
- Telephone/voice systems design and installations
- Optical fibre communicaiton technology
- Building management systems

Industrial
Electrical contractors are requested to install, maintain and repair electrical/electronics,
installations and equipment in factories, warehouses etc.
- Installation and testing of main switchboards

- Connection of power supply to production line equipment - electrical/electronics

Management & Estimating
The management and estimating section of the industry offers many opportunities
and is considered to be the white collar side of the electrical industry. This section
